Candle Care and Advice

Make the Most of Your Old Flame Candle

At Old Flame Collectables, we want you to enjoy your candle for as long as possible. A little care goes a long way in helping your candle burn beautifully, evenly and safely.

Follow our simple candle care guide to get the best experience from your candle.

Before Lighting

Before each burn:

  • Place your candle on a stable, level and heat-resistant surface.
  • Keep it away from draughts, open windows and anything that could catch fire.
  • Trim the wick to around 5mm before lighting.
  • Remove any loose wick trimmings, matches or other debris from the wax.
  • For candles with more than one wick, trim each wick to the same length.

The First Burn

The first burn is one of the most important.

Allow the melted wax to spread towards the edges of the container before extinguishing the candle. This helps the wax burn evenly and reduces the chance of tunnelling, where wax remains around the sides of the container.

For the best results, we recommend allowing around 2–4 hours for the first burn, depending on the size of your candle.

Never leave a candle burning for longer than the recommended maximum burn time.

While Your Candle Is Burning

For a safe and enjoyable burn:

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Keep your candle away from children and pets.
  • Keep it well away from curtains, furniture and other flammable items.
  • Never place your candle directly beside another heat source.
  • Do not move the candle while the wax is melted or the container is hot.
  • Keep the wax pool clear of wick trimmings, matches and other objects.
  • If the flame becomes particularly large, flickers excessively or produces significant soot, extinguish the candle and allow it to cool before trimming the wick and relighting.

When to Stop Burning

When approximately 10mm of wax remains, it is time to retire your candle.

Do not continue burning a container candle once the flame is able to reach the base or sides of the container, as this can cause the container to become excessively hot.

Extinguishing Your Candle

For the best results, use a candle snuffer to extinguish the flame.

If you do not have a snuffer, carefully extinguish the flame without disturbing the melted wax.

Avoid blowing directly onto the flame, as this can cause hot wax to splash.

Always allow the candle and container to cool completely before moving it.

Caring for Your Candle

When your candle isn't being enjoyed, keep it somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight and heat.

If your candle comes with a lid, replace it once the candle has completely cooled. This helps keep the wax clean and protects the fragrance between burns.

Candle Safety

Never leave a burning candle unattended.

Always keep candles out of reach of children and pets. Burn your candle within sight and extinguish it before leaving the room, going to sleep or whenever you are unable to monitor it.

Never use a candle if its container is cracked, chipped, damaged or otherwise unsafe.

Always follow any additional safety instructions provided with your individual Old Flame Collectables candle.
